Joel Doiron Salvages Top 10 Finish at Cornwall in Borrowed Ride After Engine Expires in Opening Practice on Sunday Night

After starting the 2014 racing season with a solid top ten finish in the 100 lap Canadian Nationals Series at Cornwall Speedway one week ago, Joel Doiron and his team were looking forward to a return trip to Cornwall for the first regular program of the season. Doiron and his team also planned a Friday night trip to Mohawk International Raceway, where they plan to race regularly as well in 2014.

Doiron made the trek to Mohawk International Raceway in Hogansburg, New York on Friday night only to get rained out after opening practice. The season opener was rained out the previous week, and more rain that past week has been frustrating for everyone involved.

Sunday looked much more promising with the weather. Doiron began the night with an opening practice session, but it did not go well for the 40 team, as the motor expired and the car was done for the evening. The team drove to Alexandria and returned with the Chris Raabe 01 backup car for Joel to drive in the 30 lap main event. He would have to start from the rear of the field, and moved up continuously throughout the race and salvaged a top ten finish.

“I really have to thank Chris Raabe and the 01 team as well as everyone on our team for working hard getting the 01 backup car ready for me to drive”, says Doiron. “I am thankful that Mike and Chris (Raabe) offered up their car for me”.

This coming weekend, Doiron will return to Mohawk International Raceway on Friday night for the rescheduled 50 lap Memorial Cup/Frenchie’s “Chevy Runs Deep” Series race. On Sunday night the action will move back to Cornwall Speedway.

After a long off-season, Joel Doiron was finally ready to get back to the track with a big weekend of racing planned out. Friday night was the Mohawk International Raceway season opener and Sunday night was opening night at Cornwall Speedway featuring a 100 lap DIRTcar 358 Series/Canadian Nationals Series event.

The rain held off at Mohawk Raceway on Friday night for a little while, but the forecast looked worse by the minute and shortly before 3pm track officials made the inevitable decision to cancel Friday night’s opening night.

Cornwall Speedway was set to open their 2014 and first season under new management in over 30 years. Doiron began the night by turning the fifth fastest speed in his time group, placing him fifth to start the 8 lap qualifying heat race. Joel would maintain that spot, locking into the 100 lap main event. He started deep in the field, rolling off the starting grid from the 17th position. After falling back a couple positions early, Doiron charged back, and was inside the top 15 before they completed lap 10. Doiron displayed a great deal of patience in the opening 50 laps of the race, and as they approached halfway, he had just made his way into the top ten. Doiron continued inside the top ten throughout the second half of the race, advancing to as high as seventh through the closing laps. He crossed the finish line in eighth place.

“It was a solid start to the season for us”, says Doiron. “We will take that and move on to next week. I am happy to get the season underway, and hopefully we can build on this in the coming weeks and get back to victory lane”.
