Joel Doiron Battles to a Pair of Top Five Finishes at Mohawk and Cornwall

With the bad luck seemingly in the past, Joel Doiron and his Alexandria, Ontario based team were looking for another solid weekend with events at Mohawk International Raceway on Friday night and Cornwall Motor Speedway on Sunday.

Doiron had a strong third place finish last week at Mohawk Raceway, and was back this past Friday night looking to build on their recent success. The night started with the usual qualifying heat races, and Doiron finished in second place after starting fifth. After making a few changes to get the car dialed in, Doiron returned to the track later in the evening for the 25 lap main event. He started the race from the sixth position and after just a few laps he was up to fourth. Joel maintained a top five spot throughout the event, and finished with a strong fourth place result.

“The car was pretty good again tonight. We are definitely in the right direction”, explains Doiron. “Some of these guys really have this place figured out week after week, but we will keep working hard”.

Cornwall Speedway was up next on Sunday night. After finishing second in the qualifier, Doiron and his team began to prepare for the 30 lap main event. Joel started from the sixth position, and worked his way into the top five by halfway. An incident involving another competitor caused some concern early in the race, but simmered down after the other driver was parked for the night. A flat tire on the final lap looked like it would steal a top five finish from Doiron, but he returned to the track and was able to climb back into the picture on the last lap with a just a few cars remaining on the track.

Doiron will return to Mohawk International Raceway this Friday night and will be back at Cornwall Speedway on Sunday as the Modifieds share center stage with the World of Outlaw Sprint Cars.

Joel Doiron Posts Strong Third Place Finish at Mohawk International Raceway; Cornwall Speedway Rained Out for First Time in 2014

The 2014 season has been one of frustration for Joel Doiron during the past couple months, but as the calendar hits July, things seem to be picking up for Doiron. During last weekend’s triple header at Cornwall, Dorion led several laps, and finished fifth in the first race, and had back to back top ten results in the other two main events that day. This past weekend, Doiron was looking for more of the same as he returned to Mohawk International Raceway on Friday night and Cornwall Speedway once again on Sunday evening.

Friday night started off with the usual qualifying heat races, and Doiron picked up the win in the 8 lap event. In the 25 lap main event, Doiron started up front and led the opening 11 laps of the race. He lost a little ground maneuvering around the heavy lapped traffic, falling to third place and that is where he would finish.

“The car was pretty good tonight. We went all 25 laps without a caution, and the lapped traffic was pretty fierce”, says Doiron. “We had a pretty good week last week, and we have carried that into this weekend so far, hopefully we can keep the bad luck away from us for the rest of the year”.

Sunday night was supposed to be another event at Cornwall Speedway, but Mother Nature had other plans and the events were cancelled. Doiron will return to both Mohawk Raceway and Cornwall Speedway this coming weekend.

Joel Doiron Battles to Strong 11th Place Finish with the Big Block Modified Super DIRTcar Series at Cornwall Speedway; Busy Weekend of Racing Coming Up

After another tough weekend at the track last week, Joel Doiron was looking forward to getting back to business and trying to shake off the bad luck that has hit them recently. They were in action on Friday night at Mohawk International Raceway and back to Cornwall Speedway on Sunday night for a 100 lap Big Block Modified Super DIRTcar Series race.

Doiron began the night at Mohawk with a fast car in the opening practice session. He started third in his qualifier and moved to second before the end of the race. He started the 25 lap feature from the front row, but they struggled in the opening laps and slid back to eighth place by the first caution on lap 12. Just a few laps later, Joel hit pit road and was soon were done for the night.

Sunday night was a big night at Cornwall Speedway with a 100 lap Big Block Modified Super DIRTcar Series race on the schedule, bringing in some of the best Modified racers in the Northeast. Doiron was a little off the pace in his group in the opening practice but they made some adjustment and they gained a lot of speed in the time trials, placing second in his group, and earning a front row starting position. A third place finish in the qualifier put Joel in the redraw for a top 12 starting spot for the 100 lap main event in which he drew 9th. It was a solid run for Doiron, maintaining a top 10 position for most of the race despite the disadvantage with his small block against the big block counterparts. Doiron crossed the finish line in 11th place.

“It was a good night for us here tonight racing against the Big Blocks”, states Doiron after the race. The car ran really well, and I had a blast racing side by side with Gary (Tomkins) for most of the race. He is a first class driver”.

Joel Doiron will have a busy weekend coming up, starting with a 50 lap Frenchie’s “Chevy Runs Deep” Series race at Mohawk International Raceway on Friday night. Doiron finished sixth in the opening round of the Series on May 30th and will be looking for a strong finish to remain in contention for the championship. Sunday night will be a busy night at Cornwall Speedway with a pair of 40 lap features held over from June 22nd to start the night off before getting into the regular July 6th program.

Joel Doiron Plagued by Motor Issues on Friday Night at Mohawk Raceway; Racing at Cornwall Postponed Due To Tragic Incident on the Track

The 2014 season has certainly not gone according to plan for Joel Doiron. At the start of the season, they had planned to race two nights a week; Mohawk International Raceway on Friday nights, and Cornwall Speedway on Sundays. Mohawk International Raceway has battled Mother Nature virtually every week, and when they do race, Doiron has battled bad luck.

Doiron was back at Mohawk International Raceway on Friday night and finally under sunny conditions. In the qualifying heat race, Doiron started fourth, and worked his way forward to finish second. However, a problem with the engine was soon detected, and Doiron was unable to continue. He did start the race in a borrowed Gilles Godard Sportsman in order to salvage some points on an otherwise disappointing night.

Ovide Doiron worked virtually non-stop from Friday night through Sunday building a new motor from scratch, getting ready for Sunday night at Cornwall. It started off looking like it was going to be a good night. Joel posted the second fastest speed in the opening practice session, and backed that up with a win in his qualifying heat race. As the team was preparing for the first of two 40 lap features on the night, tragedy struck on the race track as Danny Lefebvre was involved in a fatal collision on the track. The race was postponed and both features will be made up before the regular program on Sunday, July 6th.

Doiron will return to action on Friday night at Mohawk International Raceway and will be back at Cornwall Speedway this coming Sunday night for a 100 lap Big Block Modified Super DIRTcar Series race.

Joel Doiron Battles to 6th Place Finish in Frenchie’s 50 Lap Season Opener at Mohawk Raceway; Another Top Ten Finish on Sunday at Cornwall Speedway

After getting rained out the first two scheduled weeks of the season at Mohawk Raceway, Joel Doiron and his team were finally able to get their season started at their second weekly track in 2014. Doiron was also back at Cornwall Speedway on Sunday looking for a strong finish.

At Mohawk Raceway, Doiron began the night with a third place run in his qualifying heat race, making the redraw for a top 12 starting spot in the 50 lap main event. Doiron started from the seventh position and had made his way to third by the time the first caution was displayed on lap six. Doiron continued in the top five through the first half of the race, and maintained that position through the final caution of the night on lap 41. When the race resumed, Doiron fell back one spot and he crossed the finish line in fourth place.

“It was a pretty good run, we just need to be a little bit better”, says Doiron. “We will keep working at it here, and hopefully we can get the car dialed in before long”.

The next race on the schedule came at Cornwall Speedway on Sunday night. The qualifying heat race was a struggle for Doiron, and the team made some changes to the car before getting back on track for the 30 lap main event later in the event. Doiron started from the 11th position, and advanced to eighth as they completed lap 10. Doiron battled fuel issues all night affecting the car’s performance. He would end the night with a 10th place finish.

This coming weekend, Doiron and the 358 Modified division will have the night off on Friday at Mohawk, so the only racing action of the weekend will come on Sunday night at Cornwall Speedway. After three events so far, Doiron is currently 9th in track points, but only 15 points back of fifth place. Being early in 2014, the points are very close still amongst all competitors.

Joel Doiron Salvages Top 10 Finish at Cornwall in Borrowed Ride After Engine Expires in Opening Practice on Sunday Night

After starting the 2014 racing season with a solid top ten finish in the 100 lap Canadian Nationals Series at Cornwall Speedway one week ago, Joel Doiron and his team were looking forward to a return trip to Cornwall for the first regular program of the season. Doiron and his team also planned a Friday night trip to Mohawk International Raceway, where they plan to race regularly as well in 2014.

Doiron made the trek to Mohawk International Raceway in Hogansburg, New York on Friday night only to get rained out after opening practice. The season opener was rained out the previous week, and more rain that past week has been frustrating for everyone involved.

Sunday looked much more promising with the weather. Doiron began the night with an opening practice session, but it did not go well for the 40 team, as the motor expired and the car was done for the evening. The team drove to Alexandria and returned with the Chris Raabe 01 backup car for Joel to drive in the 30 lap main event. He would have to start from the rear of the field, and moved up continuously throughout the race and salvaged a top ten finish.

“I really have to thank Chris Raabe and the 01 team as well as everyone on our team for working hard getting the 01 backup car ready for me to drive”, says Doiron. “I am thankful that Mike and Chris (Raabe) offered up their car for me”.

This coming weekend, Doiron will return to Mohawk International Raceway on Friday night for the rescheduled 50 lap Memorial Cup/Frenchie’s “Chevy Runs Deep” Series race. On Sunday night the action will move back to Cornwall Speedway.
