Joel Doiron Overcomes Slow Start and Rough Track Conditions to Score Sixth Place Finish on Opening Night at Cornwall Speedway

After getting rained out for three consecutive weeks, Joel Doiron and his team were finally able to start the 2013 season at Cornwall Motor Speedway on Sunday night. Although the track conditions were less than ideal after all the rain this area as seen over the past few days leading up to Sunday, in addition to the rain the past month that has kept the Speedway idle the first three scheduled weeks of the season.

Like many tracks on opening night, the starting lineup for the qualifying heat races were determined by a random draw. Unfortunately for Doiron, a high number put him at the back of his qualifying heat race, and he was unable to gain much ground. He would be relegated to the last chance consolation race in order to make the 24 car starting field. A fourth place finish earned Doiron a spot in the 30 lap main event, and would fire from near the rear of the field in 21st starting position. At the drop of the green flag, Doiron pressed forward, and as the race reached the halfway point he was edging towards the top ten. With the track conditions the way they were due to the rain, passing was at a premium and Doiron was one of the few cars that started near the back that were able to move forward. As the race ended, Joel crossed the finish line with a very solid seventh place finish.

“It was a tough night out there for sure, and we are real happy to come out of here with the finish that we did”, says Doiron. “Hopefully we can get some better weather this coming week and help dry the place out some and next week will be much better for all of us”.

This coming weekend, Doiron will be back at Cornwall Motor Speedway looking to build on there top ten finish from opening night. It will also be driver autograph night giving fans a chance to get up close to the drivers and their cars during the intermission on Sunday night.

Joel Doiron Gets Sixth Place Finish at Mohawk International Raceway 50 Lap Memorial Cup Event; Cornwall Speedway Rained Out for Third Consecutive Week

It has been nearly impossible for Joel Doiron and his Alexandria, Ontario based team to gain any momentum in the early stages of the 2013 season. Looking back over the last month, they have had a test session at Mohawk Raceway cancelled due to rain, and now the first three events at Cornwall Motor Speedway have all been wiped off the schedule due to Mother Nature.

During the month of May, Doiron did get two races in and after a solid third place finish on opening night, they returned this past Friday night for the 50 lap Memorial Cup race that was also the first race in the Frenchie’s “Chevy Runs Deep” Modified Series. The night started well for Doiron, as he started on the front row of the 10 lap preliminary qualifier and checked out on the field cruising to the win by more than a straightaway. The win earned him a spot in the redraw for a top 12 starting spot in the night’s main event and he would start from the inside of row three in the fifth position. Doiron maintained that position through much of the race and when the dust settled at the end of the night he was in sixth place.

“The car was really good early tonight in the heat race”, says Doiron. “We struggled a bit in the feature, especially in the second half of the race, but we were able to bring the car home in one piece in sixth place so it wasn’t a bad night. We were just a little bit off on the setup and that is all it takes with the competition as tough as it is here at Mohawk”.

The 100 lap Canadian Nationals Series race on Sunday was postponed for the third consecutive week on Sunday. That race will now take place on Canada Day Monday and will also be a Mr. DIRTcar 358 Modified Series race. This Monday race will make for an exciting weekend doubleheader with the 100 lap Big Block Modified Super DIRTcar Series already on the schedule for Sunday, June 30th.
